Biography

Robert Rabensteiner was born in 1965 in Merano, South Tyrol, and grew up in the mountains of northern Italy, where German was his first language. After studying art history, he taught art, worked in photography and assisted several designers, until a chance meeting in Milan with Franca Sozzani, then editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia, brought him into the world of fashion magazines.

At L'Uomo Vogue he started as a stylist in a team of three and went on to become fashion director and editor-at-large, working alongside Franca Sozzani for 28 years. He has also contributed to Vogue Italia, Purple and T: The New York Times Style Magazine, collaborating with photographers such as Deborah Turbeville, Juergen Teller, Nathaniel Goldberg and Pierpaolo Ferrari.

Inspired by classic cinema and the films of Luchino Visconti, his work is known for its dreamlike, cinematic tone and effortless elegance. Today he works as a creative consultant – styling, concepts and shows – for houses including Roberto Cavalli, Moncler and Trussardi.
